Lessons designed around the learner

Every learner starts from a different point. Lessons are adjusted to their experience, confidence, current skills and goals.

🚗

Individual lessons

One-on-one tuition focused on the skills the learner needs next — from vehicle control and observation through to traffic situations, decision-making and independent driving.

🌱

Build good habits early

In my experience, the first professional lesson is ideally around the 10–15 hour mark. By then the learner has had some time to become comfortable with the car, and a lesson or two can help establish correct habits early and build on them as they progress.

An earlier lesson can also be very beneficial if parents would like guidance from the beginning.

🧭

Progress, not just test preparation

The aim is to develop a safe, confident driver — not simply someone who can perform a test route. We work towards skills that remain useful long after the provisional licence is obtained.

Lesson length

60 minutes — $120
Ideal for focused skill development and regular practice.

90 minutes — $160
Useful for combining several skills or working on test preparation.

Longer than 90 minutes is generally not recommended because concentration and learning quality can decline. Longer sessions can be considered where appropriate.

Pick-up and drop-off

Depending on location, most lessons can start from school or home and finish at your home. This makes lessons easier to fit around school, work and family commitments.

Availability: generally after 4pm on weekdays, weekends by appointment, and throughout school holidays.

A note for parents

Parents are an important part of the learning process. My goal is to complement the practice you are already doing at home.

“Should my child have a lesson every week?”

My general answer is no — not necessarily. Learners need time between professional lessons to practise and consolidate the skills they've been taught. Regular home practice can be just as important as the lesson itself.

That said, if a learner needs more frequent support, weekly lessons are absolutely possible.

How I work with families

  • Clear feedback after lessons.
  • Practical suggestions for what to practise next.
  • Focus on safe habits rather than simply accumulating hours.
  • Support for parents who aren't sure what to practise or how to structure sessions.
  • Progress towards independent driving, not dependence on an instructor.

Driving test preparation

When the learner is ready, lessons can become more focused on test preparation without losing sight of the bigger goal: safe independent driving.

Tranmere test area

At least one lesson is focused in the Tranmere area, where the learner's test will be conducted. This helps learners become familiar with the types of roads, intersections, traffic conditions and situations they may encounter.

Test-day skills

We can work on observation, speed management, lane positioning, intersections, roundabouts, parking, manoeuvres, decision-making and the learner's ability to drive independently.

Mock-test approach

As the test approaches, lessons can be structured to replicate the demands of an assessment and identify any remaining weaknesses before test day.

MDI preparation

Preparing to become a Motor Driving Instructor? This is a specialist service and is offered separately from standard learner lessons.

Preparation for potential MDIs

Drawing on practical experience with driver instruction, I can provide targeted preparation for people considering or working towards the South Australian Motor Driving Instructor pathway.

Sessions can be tailored to areas such as commentary driving, hazard identification, risk reduction, teaching points, observation and instructional technique.

Different rates apply for MDI preparation. Please contact me to discuss your requirements and the type of preparation you need.

About Ryan

A calm, practical approach to learning to drive.

I have spent many years working with young people, and one of the things I value most is the relationships built along the way. Learning to drive can be exciting, but it can also be stressful. I aim to create lessons where learners feel supported, challenged appropriately and comfortable asking questions.

My teaching approach is built around clear explanations, patience and progressive skill development. The learner should understand why a particular driving decision is safe — not simply memorise what to do.

I also use a new MG hybrid for lessons, providing a modern, comfortable and more environmentally conscious training vehicle.

Frequently asked questions

How do I book a lesson?

At the moment, the easiest way is to call. I find this works particularly well for parents because we can discuss the learner's experience, availability and what you are hoping to achieve.

Should my child have a lesson every week?

Not necessarily. Time between lessons allows learners to practise and consolidate skills. Weekly lessons are available when a learner needs more frequent support.

When should my child have their first professional lesson?

In my experience, around the 10–15 hour mark is often ideal. A lesson or two at this stage can help form correct habits early and provide a strong foundation. Earlier lessons can also be useful if parents want guidance from the beginning.

Are 90-minute lessons better than 60-minute lessons?

Not automatically. Ninety minutes can be useful for combining skills or doing more extensive test preparation, but concentration can become an issue beyond 90 minutes. Quality of learning is more important than simply increasing lesson length.

Do you offer MDI preparation?

Yes. Preparatory lessons for potential Motor Driving Instructors are a speciality and are priced differently from standard learner lessons. Contact me to discuss your needs.

Can lessons start at school?

Depending on location and timing, most lessons can start from school or home and finish at your home.

Do you teach in the Tranmere test area?

Yes. At least one lesson is focused in the Tranmere area where your test will be conducted, with additional test-area preparation as required.
